Life Science Specialist

The Life Sciences Technician is responsible for the following:

  • Prepare and breakdown biology labs in coordination with Life Science Coordinator - including: troubleshoot and resolve technical problems during laboratory sessions, solution/media prep, gathering instrumentation, maintaining instrumentation, acquiring supplies, keeping accurate records for each laboratory
  • Ensure all safety standards and work practices are followed according to college policy and law - including: working knowledge of proper training for all students and faculty on UNH Chems website, proper labeling, personal protective equipment, fire protection and waste disposal
  • Animal care – perform proper feeding and cleaning, maintaining a high level of cleanliness in animal facility, prepare for government inspections, humanely and safely prepare/dispose of animals used for labs, maintain detailed, accurate animal records in accordance with IACUC
  • Assist faculty with computer needs and upkeep department computers (update, install software, etc)
  • Supply requisition - utilize a broad range of suppliers to ensure best pricing and quality of materials to meet a variety of very specialized needs; make trips to local stores to obtain supplies as needed; help maintain extensive inventories of chemicals and supplies for all stock rooms, storage areas and labs, including faculty labs
  • Maintain, test, calibrate, and perform preventative maintenance on all scientific lab equipment, including microscopes, balances, dissecting scopes, autoclave, water purifying system, centrifuges, etc and requisition repairs as necessary
  • Assist in checking out equipment and chemicals to faculty and research students
  • Clean and restock all labs and multiple storage areas
  • Assist with the duties of the Departmental clerical position as needed


  • Associates degree in Biology required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 1-3 yrs experience with solution preparation, instrumentation utilization and repair and recordkeeping required
  • Chemistry and math skills to make appropriate lab solutions
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Apps (i.e. Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs)
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with students and faculty in a diverse environment
  • Multitasking and organizational skills a must
  • Animal care/IACUC experience ideal
  • Knowledge of chemical regulatory and safety procedures preferred
