Job Title: Associate Program Supervisor – Family Shelter
Position Summary:
We are seeking a strong, grounded, and experienced leader to step into the newly created role of Associate Program Supervisor at our Family Shelter. This is a hands-on leadership position designed to provide direct support to the Shelter Director while helping to reshape the workplace culture, improve team accountability, and strengthen client services.
This individual will play a vital role in rebuilding team structure and operational systems, including rewriting or creating policies, conducting staff supervision, and addressing workplace challenges. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in social services who is passionate about stabilizing teams, fostering a healthy work environment, and improving service delivery for vulnerable families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day oversight of shelter operations in partnership with the Program Manager
- Supervise frontline staff, including conducting regular one-on-ones, supervision reports, and performance evaluations
- Identify and address toxic workplace behaviors while modeling professionalism, empathy, and accountability
- Lead efforts to revise and/or implement shelter policies, procedures, and workflows
- Support staff development, team cohesion, and morale
- Act as a liaison between staff and leadership to ensure consistent communication and follow-through
- Help reduce staff turnover through engagement, support, and performance coaching
- Ensure that services align with trauma-informed and client-centered practices
- Participate in conflict resolution and intervene as needed during escalated situations
- Ensure compliance with agency policies, funding regulations, and licensing standards
- Assist in hiring, onboarding, and training new staff
- Strong in employee relations; highly self-motivated and proactive.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience (one of the following required):
- Associate degree in human services or related field and 3-4 years of management experience in a shelter or residential setting
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, human services, or related field and at least 2 years of shelter management experience
- Strong understanding of social welfare systems and the unique needs of families experiencing homelessness
- Proven experience supervising diverse teams and navigating challenging interpersonal dynamics
- Demonstrated ability to lead in high-pressure or emotionally complex environments
- Skilled in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and staff coaching
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on commitments
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, housing-first models, and harm reduction is a plus
