Mentoring
518 ElevatED works with selected students in Albany, Schenectady, and Troy High Schools to provide the skills, tools, resources, opportunities, and exposure to be successful in high school, in their post-secondary education, and in future employment. One of the things that makes the program so successful is the mentoring component.
Mentors take an initial two-hour virtual training and then receive ongoing support throughout the year. Mentors are expected to spend about 2-4 hours a month with their assigned student (one in-person activity and texting in between meetings). Mentors make a minimum of a one-year commitment to work with one student. If the relationship is going well at the end of the year, continuing that relationship is discussed.
Mentors are matched with students based on shared interests. Mentoring activities take place in the community and a time and place that works best for both the mentor and the student. Activities are no- or low-cost activities like walks in the park, throwing a football, hiking, farmers markets, ice skating, bowling, movies, coffee, etc.
