* Technology Specialist (Libraries) – IT

Full Time – Max 35 hrs. wk. – Salary Rate: $55,000 - $65,000 annual


Guilderland Public Library is seeking a Technology Specialist to work with their strong established IT team.  


Technical Skills and Responsibilities:

1.    Install, configure, and maintain personal computers, networks, peripheral equipment, file servers, switches and firewalls.

2.    Install and manage wiring, including fiber optic cables, and test wiring systems.

3.    Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues both on-site and via help desk support.

4.    Run routine tests, virus checks on LAN and network systems.

5.    Troubleshoot switches, routers, circuit problems, and various third-party software applications in collaboration with vendors.

6.    Assist in the testing and implementation of new operating systems and software for interoperability and functionality.

7.    Maintain and troubleshoot various technologies and user interfaces (e.g., phone, paging systems, digital signage, building occupancy and people counting systems, copiers, door access control FOB updating systems and other library specific equipment like self-checkout, RFID technologies and material sorting equipment, scanners and receipt printers).

8.    Perform routine website adds/moves and changes (WordPress experience is highly desirable)

9.    General PC and peripheral maintenance including general cleaning.

10.    Responsible for managing user accounts, including adding and removing users, maintaining groups, managing email distribution lists, and assigning appropriate permissions as required.


Training and Support:  

1.    Develop and maintain instructional manuals for computer systems, software the systems mentioned above in #8.

2.    Set up, maintain, and provide technical support for special library programs, including audio-visual and assisted hearing technologies.

3.    Provide training and support to library staff and patrons on hardware, software, and network use.


Administrative and Developmental Responsibilities: 

1.    Gather, analyze, and track data for administrative and management needs.

2.    In the absence of the Dept. Head, perform backup operations and troubleshooting for the library’s computer network and telecommunications system.

3.    Attend seminars and technical education classes to stay current with IT trends.


Physical and Interpersonal Skills: 

1.    Possess physical condition suitable for the demands of the position, including the ability to lift up to 70 lbs, use ladders, and work in tight spaces.

2.    Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.

3.    Show an ability to work independently, adapt to changing tasks quickly, and work flexible hours.


Knowledge and Abilities: 

1.    Have a working knowledge of modern personal computers, local area networks, and installation procedures.

2.    Ability to evaluate equipment configuration requirements and direct users in system and network use. 

3.    Ability to train people with different levels of experience.

4.    Understand and follow both oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:

EITHER:

A.    Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with at least an Associate’s Degree and 6 months of full-time satisfactory experience in a Help Desk/Public Service Desk/User support of operations in a library or information services environment; OR,


B.    Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one year of satisfactory full-time paid experience in a Help Desk/Public Service Desk/User support of operations in a library or information services environment.

Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.
